Monday, August 11th

How does one get off writing blogs on a Monday afternoon instead of doing something productive, like working for a living? Well, it all starts when you pull your hamstring playing soccer, which wouldn't cause me to sit at home, unemployed, on a perfectly good afternoon, unless you have a job that requires healthy hamstrings, something like framing houses or building decks.

1 - Charles Krauthammer is one of my favorite columnists for two reasons: (1) his last name, and (2) his clarity and writing style. Here's a column for those of you politically minded folk about the art of politicing, or as I like to call it, being all things to all people, but not at the same time. Although this article is about Barack Obama, I couldn't help but think about Stephan Harper while reading the second last paragraph. During the last Canadian election, Harper and the Conservatives played to the anti-corruption crowd that was sick of the way things were being done on Parliament Hill. Then, almost immediatly after the election, David Emerson crossed the floor, and the rest is history. I guess the moral of the story is there's only one savior, and his name isn't Stephan Harper or Barack Obama, and if you expect otherwise you're only going to be dissapointed.

2 - "The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

A U.S. Court does something about the rediculous names parents give their children. I can already hear the critics now, "Who does this judge think he is? Maybe other cultures don't find this name that silly."

3 - Speaking of parental authority being challenged by the courts...

"A Canadian court has lifted a 12-year-old girl's grounding, overturning her father's punishment for disobeying his orders to stay off the Internet, his lawyer said Wednesday."

Wow. Just, wow.

4 - Believe me, this isn't as bad as it sounds. Apparently the player in question couldn't get into Canada, so they traded him rather then released him. I hope those are good bats.

Odom is headed to the Laredo Broncos of the United League. They got him Tuesday from Calgary of the Golden Baseball League for a most unlikely price: 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style.
